Members of a Nairobi County Assembly committee have ordered all Naivas Supermarkets within the county to be shut down temporarily due to what it termed as critical breaches of multiple food safety regulations.

This follows an alleged discovery by the 23-member Nairobi County Assembly Health Committee's inspection team of multiple violations that pose significant health risks to consumers.

Key findings by the team, the MCAs say, include the presence of expired products, particularly yogurt with no visible shelf life, and staff members who have not undergone mandatory health testing.

The health committee, led by its chair Maurice Ochieng while speaking at Naivas Moi Avenue branch emphasised that these violations directly compromise public health and food safety standards.

"We have realised that there are expired products which are being put on the shelves rendering Nairobians to be at a risk," he stated.

"Number two, we have come up and found that most of the people who are handling the food are not being tested, so we therefore, as a committee, resolve that we close all the Naivases so that they that they can be tested and be given certificates."

"We will not sit back," said the lead inspector, stressing the importance of ensuring food safety in the county.

The closure is intended to compel the supermarket to address these critical issues, including removing expired products and ensuring all food handlers are properly tested and certified.

The Nairobi County Assembly Health Committee has called upon the CEC Susan Silantoi to move with haste to ensure the population living in Nairobi consumes safe food.

The supermarket, they say, now has the task to take immediate corrective actions before being permitted to resume operations.
