What if the Bonga Points you have on your phone could change a farmer’s life?

That is exactly what Safaricom customers can now do, thanks to a powerful new partnership it has struck with Sistema.bio, the ‘Bonga for Biogas’ campaign.

The new campaign by Safaricom allows customers to redeem their Bonga Points to get biodigesters or donate points to help farmers across Kenya access clean, renewable energy.

This ambitious and innovative initiative is about more than just rewards, it is about turning livestock waste into wealth through biogas, and enabling the farmers who fuel our nation.

Every time you make a call, send an SMS, or use data, you earn Bonga Points.

Now, instead of just spending those points on airtime or devices, you can use them to buy a biodigester or support a farmer who needs one.

To take part:

• Dial *126#98 to redeem your points for a Sistema.bio biodigester—a system that turns cow dung into cooking gas and rich organic fertilizer.

• Or choose to donate your points to other farmers across Kenya who need support.

• Companies and organizations can also chip in with their own Bonga Points to boost farming communities.

Smallholder farmers, who form the backbone of the food system in Kenya, have faced challenges getting access to clean, affordable energy hence the need for the project.

“This campaign aligns with our broader commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals particularly on climate action, clean energy, and reduced inequalities while also advancing our purpose of transforming lives,” said Safaricom Chief Consumer Business Officer, Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi.

She added: “We believe that the Bonga for Biogas initiative will transform the lives of smallholder farmers across the country.”

Sistema.bio’s Africa Director, Eng Madrin Maina, echoed the same excitement: “Smallholder farmers are truly the backbone of Kenya’s economy, but many still struggle to access clean, affordable energy.”

“The ‘Bonga for Biogas’ campaign will help farmers turn waste into clean energy and improve their lives and we couldn’t ask for a better ally than Safaricom to scale this impact.”

Here are the key reasons why this new initiative matters:

• Biogas means less firewood, saving time and forests.

• It reduces methane emissions, a major contributor to climate change.

• It creates organic fertilizer, helping farmers improve crop yields.

• It saves money and promotes gender equity, as women and children are often the ones collecting firewood or cooking with smoky stoves.

The ‘Bonga for Biogas’ campaign helps offset carbon, change the lives of Kenyan families, specially those living in the rural areas, and enable farmers access to tools for improvement.

So, the next time you check your Bonga Points balance, think beyond airtime; Think biogas, think impact.
