Devki Steel Mills Limited has submitted an application to the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs seeking a prospecting licence in Taita Taveta County.
The company is targeting iron ore exploration within an area covering 30.7890 square kilometres, equivalent to 143 cadastral blocks.
According to the notice, the application is registered under number PL/2024/0577.
Devki has applied to prospect under Group E, classified as Base and Rare Metals, with iron ore as the mineral of interest.
The Ministry confirmed that the details of the application are publicly available, stating: “The application may be accessed from the Ministry’s portal vide the website address https://portal.miningcadastre.go.ke/ and is published in the Gazette and opened to the public for comments for twenty-one (21) days from the date of this notice.”

The notice also makes provision for public objections, adding: “Any objection by any person or Community against the grant of the prospecting licence may be submitted to the Cabinet Secretary within twenty-one days from the date of this notice at the following address.”
While the application outlines a series of fifteen coordinates marking the proposed prospecting zone, the government will only determine whether Devki is granted the licence after considering public submissions within the 21-day window.
The outcome of this process will decide whether one of Kenya’s largest steel manufacturers expands its operations into fresh iron ore exploration in Taita Taveta, a region long associated with mineral wealth.
