Mt Kipipiri Golf & Resort in Nyandarua County has become the latest battleground for Kenya’s top golfing talent, with 43 professionals starting play today in the third stage of the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) Equator Tour.

The event, which runs from August 14 to 17, offers more than just prestige; it carries crucial points for tour rankings and could shape the path to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The tour, introduced in mid-2025 as part of PGK’s three-year high-performance programme, began with its opening leg at Ruiru Sports Club.

That debut was followed by a tense second round at Limuru Country Club, where Greg Snow seized victory.

Snow’s composed performance, including a second-round 65, secured him a 276 total, twelve under par, ahead of runner-up Mohit Mediratta on 278 (-10) and third-placed Mutahi Kibugu at 280 (-8). NCBA-backed Edwin Mudanyi closed the week at 282 (-6), placing sixth.

Corporate sponsors have been key to the tour’s growth, with NCBA Bank among its main backers.

NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora emphasised that the bank’s involvement extends beyond funding events.

“We are proud to extend our support for golf to the professionals, so that we can play our part in having the country participate in the Olympics in 2028 for golf," Gachora stated.

"Together with other sponsors, our goal is to actualise the professionals’ dreams of having a stable income and training regimen in order to focus on their form and eventually raise the Kenyan flag high on global golfing stages.”

Through its sponsorship, NCBA has been funding tournament entries, providing training tools, and supporting players’ performance development.

Beneficiaries include Mudanyi, Erick Ooko, Abraham Galgallo, and Njuguna Ngugi, all competing at the highest domestic level this season.

PGK Chairman CJ Wangai said the tour’s value lies in consistent, high-quality competition.

“By providing our professionals with top-level, consistent competition and opportunities, we're setting them up to compete and win on the world stage, including the Olympics. We're grateful to the corporate sponsors whose support makes this vision a reality.”

As play continues in Nyandarua, the question remains whether Snow can maintain his lead from Limuru or if the Mt Kipipiri leg will crown a new champion.

With Olympic aspirations on the line, the stakes are as high as the fairways are demanding.
