Electricity consumers in Kenya are likely to dig deeper into their pockets following the recent Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) confirmation of a fresh tariff adjustment that will raise the cost of power by Sh4.42 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

The regulator, through notices issued on September 12, outlined three separate adjustments that together push up the monthly electricity bill.

The largest increase comes from fuel energy costs.

"Pursuant to Clause 1 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs, 2023, notice is given that all prices for electrical energy specified in Part II of the said Schedule will be liable to a fuel energy cost charge of plus 360 Kenya cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in September, 2025," the statement said.

Customers will also pay more due to foreign exchange fluctuations.

"Pursuant to Clause 2 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023, notice is given that all prices for electrical energy specified in Part II of the said Schedule will be liable to a foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment of plus 80.67 cents per kWh for all meter readings taken in September 2025," EPRA noted.

A smaller rise will come from the Water Resource Management Authority levy.

"Pursuant to Clause 5 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023, notice is given that all prices for electrical energy specified in Part II (A) of the said Schedule will be liable to a Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) Levy of plus 1.34 cents per kWh for all meter readings taken in September 2025," the notice added.

For ordinary households, these changes mean higher monthly bills.

A home that typically consumes 30kWh in a month will pay an extra Sh132.6 on top of its usual charges.

For prepaid users, the effect is immediate: Sh500 that previously bought 25 units will now only secure about 20.5 units, cutting usage by nearly 18 per cent.

The latest adjustments leave Kenyans paying significantly more for fewer units of electricity, a situation that will affect household budgets and increase operating costs for businesses across the country.
