Safaricom has once again shown its support for homegrown talent, this time on the green, by unveiling a Sh3 million sponsorship to boost careers of four promising professional golfers under a new Professional Golfers Association of Kenya (PGK) programme.

The sponsorship will benefit four of Kenya’s top young golfers: Mutahi Kibugu (Nyeri Golf Club), Mohit Mediratta (Sigona Golf Club), Samuel Njoroge (Railways Golf Club), and Matthew Wahome (Nyali Golf Country Club).

The four will now form Team Safaricom, the company’s official corporate squad that will feature in a host of PGK-sanctioned tournaments, including the Equator Tour.

“At Safaricom, we believe in transforming lives by championing Kenyans’ passions. As we celebrate 25 years of impact, we are proud to partner with PGK and commit Sh3 million towards supporting four professional golfers through the Equator Tour and the Player Development Plan,” said Safaricom CEO Dr Peter Ndegwa.

He added: “Our goal is to create a sustainable pathway for aspiring golfers in Kenya, one that inspires, empowers, and equips them to compete at the highest level.”

Golf in Kenya has often been seen as a sport for the elite, but these four young stars are changing the narrative.

With roots in clubs from Nyeri to Mombasa, their journey is proof that talent exists far and wide, and now they have the support they need to shine and grow in the sport.

“All players in our team are exceptional players and together, we are going to do great things to make our fans and sponsor Safaricom proud,” said Pro Golfer Mutahi Kibugu.

He added, “This programme is incredibly important to us as professional golfers in Kenya. It will give us the opportunity to sharpen our skills and compete and shine not just here in Kenya but even on a global stage.”

Kibugu, who made headlines at the last Magical Kenya Open, is now joined by other gifted players equally determined to fly the Kenyan flag high both locally and internationally.

The three-year deal is anchored on PGK’s Player Development Plan (PDP), a structured system focused on mentorship, consistent training, access to pro-level tournaments, and performance tracking.

This holistic approach aims to place Kenyan golfers on a steady growth trajectory through regular assessments, skill enhancement, and professional guidance from seasoned experts.

Safaricom's involvement in golf is part of its larger pledge to continue investing in youth empowerment and talent development in various sports also including athletics and football.

This latest move further cements Safaricom’s mantra of "Transforming Lives", not just through connectivity but by helping talented Kenyans realise their full potential on global stages.

With this boost, Kenya’s professional golf scene looks set to gain fresh momentum, and all eyes will now be on these four rising stars as they tee off in upcoming Equator Tour events.

PGK also launched the “Road to Olympics 2028” program alongside the Equator Tour that will run 11 events across the country to enable all the local pros to get sufficient play time.
