The quiet fairways of Ruiru Sports Club came alive on Thursday as the PGK Equator Tour officially swung into action ushering in a new era for professional golf across Kenya.
This event marked the beginning of an eight-month golfing journey across 12 stunning golf courses, a national tour where talent meets tenacity to boost Kenyan golf.
More than 50 professional golfers gathered at Ruiru to chase glory, experience, and ranking points. But what makes this tour special is its grounding in purpose.
It is part of the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) Player Development Plan (PDP) a strategy to shape well-rounded, mentally prepared and globally competitive Kenyan golfers.
And Safaricom has made a big swing with a Sh3 million sponsorship deal for the following four rising stars:

These four will represent the Safaricom Corporate Team, playing in all Equator Tour events and other PGK-sanctioned tournaments this season.
However, the support does not stop at tournament fees and gear, Safaricom is pumping money into building these young athletes into complete professionals, offering:
• Branded golf kits (polo shirts, pants, bags, caps)
• Monthly airtime and smartphone device
• Incentive cash prizes for top performers
• Financial literacy training
• Weekly gym sessions & bi-monthly mental coaching
• Monthly performance data analysis via simulators
“At Safaricom, we believe in creating more opportunities for young Kenyans to realise their full potential, both on and off the field,” announced Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.
He added: “Through this partnership with PGK, we are not just investing in these four exceptional golfers, but also in the future of Kenyan golf.”
For the young golfers selected, this sponsorship is more than just branded kits and tournaments it's a game-changing opportunity for them as they aim to go global.
“It is exciting to be supported by such a big brand like Safaricom,” said Mutahi Kibugu, one of Kenya’s most promising golf talents in the Safaricom Corporate team.
“As a team of young professional golfers, we see this as a great opportunity not just to showcase our talent, but also to grow and develop our careers further.”
He added, “With this sponsorship, we will gain skills and compete on global stages.”
Road to Muthaiga and Beyond
The PGK Equator Tour will traverse the country before culminating in a grand finale at Muthaiga Sports Club from February 5–8, 2026.
Every hole played between now and then will be a test of endurance, skill and ambition.
And with the 2028 Olympic dream in sight, the stakes could not be any higher.
The launch of the tour and the broader PDP is not only about golf it is also about mentorship, mental strength, and putting Kenyan golf on the international map.
